Google has released an iOS version of the
company's Google Play Movies & TV, granting users the playback and
streaming access to content purchased online or on an Android device. Google
Play Movies and TV for iOS offer a way for Google Play customers to view their
content on Apple devices, including the iPhone, iPod and iPad touch. As an
add-on, Chromecast owners can stream content to their televisions directly from
an iOS device. Google has plopped an iOS version of its Google Play Movies
& TV app in the iTunes App Store, meaning owners of devices with an
"i" can now watch content purchased through Mountain View's virtual
front.
Using Chromecast, you can cast movies &
TV shows from the Google Play Movies & TV app from your phone, tablet or
computer to your TV. The streaming video content currently works over Wi-Fi
only, and standard definition, not HD, will play on the phone. Users will also
be left without the "info cards" that pop up when a video is paused.
The app is compatible with iPhones, iPod and iPad touches running iOS 6 and up.
So far, TV shows are only shown in the UK, USA and Japan.
While the overall app design and user
interface is much like the Android Google Play Store app, the functionality of
the iOS title is limited to content consumption. Users can sign in and can
browse through their collection of videos but Google has opted not to activate
purchases because Apple would get a percentage of each sale.
To cast from the Google Play Movies and
TV app to your TV using your phone or tablet:
- Connect your device and the Chromecast to the same wireless network.
- Open the Google Play Movies & TV app.
- Select My Movies or My TV shows.
- Choose a movie or show.
- Touch the Cast icon.
- Then select your Chromecast from the device list.
- Touch Play on the Google Play Movies & TV app.
You may continue to use your phone or tablet
to perform other tasks while your video is playing. To control your video, you
can select the Cast button from the notification bar at the top of your device.
All video functions like Play, Pause, and Forward etc can be controlled from
your phone or tablet. To disconnect your device from your Chromecast, select
the Cast button and then select your phone or tablet.

available for free 4.9MB download from the App Store.
