Google Glass

Revolutionary Google Glass- What can it do?

In early 2012, Google released information about the Google Glass. Techies and Sci- Fi fans were both excited about this news- the Google Glass is almost like a sci-fi gadget come to life. Google is already a search giant and it has managed to bring its expertise into the world of augmented reality goggles as well. Most people expected that this would take a few years to become reality, but the corporate giant startled all by releasing these glasses within a year of the announcements being made. The former versions are already in the hands of developers, some of whom were ready to pay as high as $1500 for one of these glasses! But,before you get too excited about the glass, you need to know what it is, and what it can do.

What is Google Glass?
The Google Glass, simply put, is an augmented reality goggle. It attempts to separate data from computers and laptops and just place it right in front of your eyes, where it is most accessible. It integrates functions with camera & microphone to display in a spectacle frame. You will be able to look up things on the internet, search for places and even translate things on the go, when you wear the glasses. Glasses like these have been really popular in Science Fiction Series. Iron Man even has a more advanced version of the same!

Technology behind it
Google Glass makes use of the display in order to present the data in front of you. According to the photos released, the data will be displayed on the upper right corner of your glasses. This ensures that all the information you want is right in front of you, and at the same time, your vision is not obstructed by texts or images. The resolution is rumoured to be around 640 x 360.

Benefits of owning the Google Glass
Disconnecting the data from your phone or desktop and making it mobile and available to you has a lot of benefits. You won't have to whip your phone out to find directions to a particular place. You will be able to get translations of texts and material in real time. You will also have the option of getting transcripts of what is being said. You will get messages on the Google Glass and you can choose to reply to them as well. The camera in the Google Glass records things in your perspective. You will be able to take photos of the things you are seeing- exactly the way you see and experience them.
There is a touchpad and a microphone on one side of the frame. You will be able to select your motion commands and the Glass will interpret these commands and follow your orders.

What can Google Glass do?
The Google Glass is capable of capturing photos and videos. You will be able to call people and video chat with them as well- they will see what you are seeing! You will be able to sync the glasses with Google Maps by connecting it to your phone through the My Glass app available on the Android Play Store. Voice-to-text is also available. Accurate, real-time translation is also a big plus. You would certainly need a data-plan or an active Wi-Fi connection for the same.
Some third parties have already started developing apps for the Google Glass. Some of the coolest apps include one that lets you find your friend in a crowd, one that provides you flight details etc.

Revolutionary Idea
Google Glass is certainly a revolutionary idea. It is certainly going to be really expensive, but there are millions of tech geeks all around the world who would not mind shelling out some good bucks to get their hands on this amazing piece of technology. It is a novel idea that takes technology to another level. But it is certainly doubtful whether these glasses are going to change people's lives or even make mobiles redundant- the technology is still at an infantile level and it has to go far before it makes an actual, tangible impact on people's lives.
