Samsung could be the
latest company to rival Google in the wearable display market. A new report
suggests that the smart phone maker is working on a Google Glass-like wearable
device that could debut at IFA this year. This device is rumored to be called the
“Galaxy Glass” as reported by the Korean Times. According to the news source
“The wearable devices generate large amount of profit immediately and steady
releases of devices are showing our firm commitment as a leader in new
markets”.
The report does not
reveal many details about the actual hardware but it does state that
Samsung Electronics
would collaborate with another Samsung subsidiary called Samsung Display, to
create the Galaxy Glass. Galaxy Glass will supposedly connect to a smart phone
and would allow its wearer to make calls and listen to music. Its functionality
sounds familiar to that of the Galaxy Gear, which acts as a wrist-worn device
to newer Samsung smart phone models running Android 4.3 and higher version.
Samsung was previously awarded a design patent for a wearable display with
similar features including the ability to display information when paired to a
smart phone, make phone calls or play music.
The year 2014 will
see the emergence of many of these gadgets, according to market analysts and
company officials, as they will create new business opportunities amid
connectivity between hardware and software. Just as the smart watches emerged
as a key theme at the U.S. fair, Smart Glasses may also become the savior of
hungry tech companies with the U.S. based software giant Google currently
leading the way.
As the wearable
devices are kind of accessories so design is a major factor. Samsung’s smart
glasses should be simple and at the same time appealing on the surface. The
wearable devices are part of daily life for consumers so they will help raise
brand awareness.
IFA was the event
where Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Gear, so it generates speculation that the
company introduces yet another new wearable gadget at the same yearly trade
show this time around. We are not sure when Google will finally launch its
Google Glass to the public, but we are definitely curious to see who gets to
the market first, even though the Google Glass has technically been available
for a while now with only a couple of requirements before you can pick up your
own pair.

This rumor comes at
a very interesting time though, because just yesterday we reported that Google
and Samsung announced a patent and cross-licensing deal, which would allow the
two companies to share patents and licenses which means that we could see a lot
of Google Glass technology show up in Samsung’s own Galaxy Glass, but we’ll
have to wait and find out come September to see how close the two smart glasses
really are.
