Gmail and Google+ Services went Down Across the World

Saturday, January 25, 2014

Gmail and Google+ experienced some problem yesterday and went down for roughly 50 minutes. A service outage on Saturday morning briefly took down Google services including Gmail, the internet email service which is used by hundreds of millions of people and many businesses across the globe.
Google had first acknowledged the outage at 11am US Pacific Time on Friday (6am Saturday AEDT), said roughly one hour later that service had been restored for some users and it expected "a resolution for all users in the near future".

Gmail and Google+ Services went Down Across the World

According to the company’s Application Status dashboard, all services are now back online which tracks the state of various Google services.

However, It remained unclear what triggered the outage, which affected users in Australia, India, Britain and the United States, and prompted a stream of complaints on Twitter from users in many more countries.
The error being seen by most users at the moment is a (500) code problem, which just indicates that it is a temporary problem and does not give a clue as to a cause. Judging by the response on Twitter, the problem is currently affecting a large number of users. Google+ is also down, although you would be forgiven for not having noticed that sooner.
The Google+ outage also affects YouTube comments under the new system, which means those who are not loading at all on videos, also on Hangouts across the web and mobile. Users trying to access Gmail via external clients using either POP or IMAP protocols also are not able to get through to their inboxes. Repeated calls to the Google’s press line also failed to go through, and many have emailed to their press account for more info but there is a very good reason to suspect they might not be reading that.
Google users attempting to sign on saw a "temporary error" message and a brief note: "We are sorry but your Gmail account is temporarily unavailable. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused and suggest trying again in a few minutes."

Google calls this a “disruption” in its Gmail service according to the Apps Status Dashboard and promises for more information as soon as possible. Around 20 minutes later the service came back online for most users, but then again went down. After just under an hour, it once again seemed to be on track for users previously complaining about connectivity.
