Great news for users, Google has updated its
Play Services to version 4.1 for Android devices, bringing new features and
updates like turn-based multiplayer gaming support, a new Google Drive API,
improved battery life for users with Google Location Reporting enabled, Google+
enhancements and improved location-based ads.
SERVICES:
Turn Based Multi-player Gaming Support
This new feature now supports turn based
multiplayer. Developers can build their asynchronous games to play with friends
and auto-matched players which support 2-8 players per game. When players have
their turn, their data is uploaded to Play Services and shared with other
players automatically. While some games may already have this type of
functionality, it would require them to run their own backend to make it
possible. Now the developers can utilize Google’s resources to support this
kind of gaming environment. Developers can also add a new feature which is
"Connecting to Play Games" animation during the game sign-in or
log-in process, giving the accompanying permissions dialog box more contexts.
Google Drive
Google
is introducing a “Developer preview” of Drive API in Play Services, which will
allow developers to read-write files directly in Google Drive from their
application i.e. which will allow for cross-device synchronization. This should
be particularly useful for file explorers and office suites. Users can work with files offline too —
changes are synced with Google Drive automatically when they reconnect. The API
also includes UI components including a file picker and save dialog.
Google Mobile Ads
With Google Play services 4.1, the Google
Mobile Ads SDK (Software Development Kit) now fully supports Double-click for
Publishers, Search Ads for Mobile Apps and Double-click Ad Exchange. You can
also use a newly publisher-provided location API to provide Google with the
location when a request for ads occurs. Location-based ads can improve your
application monetization.
Google+
The Google's new Google+ enhancements
broadens the list of contacts available to Gmail users so that it includes both
the email addresses of their existing contacts as well as the names of people
on the Google+ social network. Thus, a person can send an email directly to
friends or strangers, who are part of their Google+. The new PS version brings
better Google+ sharing experience and improves the sharing functionality.
Improved Battery Life
The Google Play Services 4.1 update happens
to include a fix for the battery draining bug related to location services,
which is one of the problems which many of the KitKat users have experienced.
Now you can enjoy having your phone live for more than 10 hours. It claims an
improvement to battery life through alterations in Google Location Reporting.
These services of Google Play Store are in
Roll out phase. Once the roll out is complete you’ll be able to download the
SDK using the Android SDK manager and get started with the new APIs. Google
continues to improve Android via their Google Play Services. These types of advancements
were earlier impossible in older versions of Android without a major update.
But now we can experience them more often and that’s certainly something to
celebrate. Cheers !
