The GT Advanced Technologies, company which produces advanced sapphire material, tied knots with Apple in $578M contract. Apple has bought its own plant which marks its huge interest in Sapphire.

SAPPHIRE…Welcome to the world of Apple

Sapphire being the second largest stone in the world after Diamond will be used in strengthening iPhone’s screen, protecting it from damages.

Apple has previously applied Sapphire in its iPhone 5 and 5s. In iPhone5, Sapphire was used to protect camera’s rear lens and in iPhone 5s it is integrated into Touch ID which is the fingerprint sensor.

The patent application describes about Apple’s systematic approach to prepare Sapphire to be used efficiently in consumer electronics products. This valuable material can be very easily integrated with glass and in many ways is much profitable than glass.

Features of Sapphire:

  • Sapphire is superior to glass.
  • Synthetic Sapphire has no color, as it is the single crystal which is grown to be optically transparent which makes it resemble glass.
  • It is extremely hard which means better scratch resistance.
  • Better durability with less flaw initiation which means it is resistant to cracks.

Sapphire is frequently compared with Gorilla Glass for hardness, toughness, density and on several other parameters.

Comparison between Sapphire and Gorilla Glass:

  • The Density of Sapphire is 3.98g/cm3while Gorilla Glass is 2.54g/cm3.
  • Toughness of Sapphire is four times greater than Gorilla Glass.
  • Sapphire has better optical qualities than Gorilla Glass as the refractive index of Sapphire is greater than Gorilla Glass which is 1.76 and 1.5 respectively.

Apple is currently using Sapphire for its touch sensors and Home buttons but will increase its actual usability of Sapphire in 2014. Apple’s millions of investment in Sapphire indicates how important Sapphire is for Apple. Apple is the leading investor in Sapphire and will take its production rate to new level in the history of Apple.

So, in 2014, with Sapphire, you will be able to scratch the surface the way you want…!!!
