Facebook’s Paper available for iOS

Wednesday, February 05, 2014

Good news for iOS users, the Facebook’s recent standalone application is now available for download in US. Paper app which is recently launched helps to explore and share stories from friends and the world around us.

Facebook’s Paper available for iOSPaper lets you choose different content “Sections” to add to a sort of digital newspaper. You can browse a completely redesigned News Feed and your Paper sections to read stories from friends, public figures and emerging content creators in a stylized full-screen format. Paper also lets you share the content with a visually-focused composer that shows a preview of exactly how your post will look to others.

Created by a small group of star designers and engineers operating as a sort of startup within the company itself, Paper is not a replacement for the official Facebook application so much as an alternative to it. However, it is far more polished and innovative than Facebook’s other offerings for instance letting the status updates and pictures luxuriate in a full screen layout instead of displaying them in a vertical feed.

Paper for iOS is free to download for anyone in the US with iOS 7 or later. Facebook has not mentioned any recent plans for an iPad or Android version. Paper is something of a Trojan horse which is meant to transform the idea of what it means to use Facebook in the first place. By expanding the quality of content you can expect to find that Paper is trying to position itself as a place you will go for news and inspiration and just as importantly, as the kind of place you will want to dedicate to yourself.

Among major differences between other news reader apps and Paper is that the latter does not allow users to add their own links. The design focuses your attention on just one thing at a time. You can flip through updates one at a time. Each photo album, web links or single sentence status update gets a chance to fill the whole screen. Profiles, Pages and Events now have a truly mobile first design that focuses on images and swipable full-screen cards to convey the most important images. In the end, it is a complete Facebook client.
