Asus has debuted the Transformer Book Duet TD300 at CES in
Las Vegas, the TD300, a laptop/tablet convertible, is being marketed as the
first ever “quad-mode” convertible, as it is able not only to switch between
laptop and tablet mode, but also between Windows 8.1 and Android. The company has even given an instant-switch button to change the operating system.
Features of this hybrid:
- Dual-OS – Windows 8.1 Standard / Android 4.1
- Intel core i7 processor
- 13.3-inch Full HD IPS multi-touch display
- 4GB DDR3L 1600 RAM
- Up to 128GB iSSD
- Keyboard port houses up to 1TB HDD
- 802.11ac Wi-Fi; Bluetooth 4.0 + EDR
- Tablet ports: Micro SD card, DC jack, Headphone jack
- Keyboard dock ports: 1 x USB 3.0, 2 x USB 2.0, HDMI 1.4, 10/100Mbit/s LAN, audio combo jack, DC jack
- Disadvantages of this hybrid:
- It runs an older version of Android (4.1)
- With the dock on it, it is a thick and hefty package
- The duet’s pixel resolution 1,920x1,080 is low as compared to super high resolution of other CES products
The TD300 marks the beginning that Android has been run
natively on Core processors, and Asus claims that the resulting performance far
outstrips even the fastest Android tablets on the market.
Verdict
Asus seriously deserves a pat on the back simply for
managing such an engineering feat, but to do it in reality and that too in
budget-priced miracle – well, Asus has probably earned an enthusiastic hug. The
hardware does not give the premium-feeling, but we can definitely see the
appeal of having both OSes at your disposal. However, the pricing and
availability is not announced yet.
