As Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg had promised more standalone apps in 2014, the company has announced Paper, a standalone news reader mobile app that has been under work for years. This app helps you explore and share stories from friends and the world around you. Paper makes storytelling more creative with an immersive design and full screen, distraction-free layouts. It has been made easier to craft and share beautiful stories of your own.
Your
Paper is made of stories so you can follow your favorite interests. The first
section in the Paper is your Facebook News Feed, where you can enjoy new
designs for photos, videos, audios and longer written posts. You can customize
the Paper with a choice of more than a dozen other sections about various
themes and topics—from photography and sports to food, science and technology.
Each section includes a rich mix of content from emerging voices and well-known
publications.
The
new app will surface content from 19 different "sections," including
sports, tech, pop culture, and "LOL." The app also has a
"Newsfeed" section, which is the same News Feed which the users are
familiar with but with a new innovative design. Each section will have a
rotating carousel of images across the top and individual cards and stories
below that image. The new app was specially designed to look different from the
native apps and has larger images and content cards without the typical blue
trim present on Facebook's native apps.
There
will be no buttons to push. Instead, the users will be able to flip through
stories and other posts by tilting the phone in various ways and swiping with
their fingers. When your want to post your own story, Paper will let you look
at a preview before sharing. You can tilt your phone to capture high-resolution
panoramic photos from corner to corner and see faces and other important
details up close. Paper presents stories and themed sections to allow people to
follow topics ranging from news headlines to food to sports to science. It has
a tiled design that enables users to customize the display alongside a personal
Facebook feed.
Despite
Facebook's
mobile ad success — 53% of the company revenue came from mobile ads last
quarter — Paper will launch without any ads on the service.
This includes sponsored stories. It is likely that ads will be added once the
company examines how users engage with the product, but for now, the app will
be ad-free. There is no Android or iPad version of Paper, and there is no
timeline for when they may be available. The app will be available for the
iPhone in the US on February 3rd.
